OLYMP: Climate neutrality at company headquarters in Germany

11.11.2019 OLYMP: Climate neutrality at company headquarters in Germany

Bietigheim-Bissingen clothing specialist is a climate neutral company in 2019

OLYMP Bezner KG based in Bietigheim-Bissingen near Stuttgart (district of Ludwigsburg, Baden-W├╝rttemberg, Germany) has always been aware of its corporate responsibility towards humans, animals, nature and the environment. With the aim of increasing climate protection even further, the medium-sized company has now been able to completely offset its greenhouse gas emissions for 2018 at its headquarters in Bietigheim-Bissingen and achieve full climate neutrality through extensive sustainability activities.

On behalf of OLYMP Bezner KG, the renowned climate protection consultancy ClimatePartner GmbH based in Munich, created a Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) for the years 2016 to 2018 based on the directives of the private transnational initiative Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG), which calculates and records greenhouse gas emissions. The ecological footprint identified in this way provides an important component in the implementation of an extensive climate protection strategy. Comprehensive analysis makes it possible to identify potential areas of improvement, so that effective measures can be determined for achieving specific climate protection objectives. In this way, OLYMP was able to offset more than 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2018.

Mark Bezner, owner and CEO of OLYMP Bezner KG, had the following to say: “The subject of sustainability in OLYMP reflects our urgent efforts to keep the ecological footprint of our company as small as possible. In this context, it was important for us to include all aspects in the evaluation process. For this reason, contrary to common practice, we also took into account staff mobility, as the carbon dioxide emissions associated with more than 500 employees at the Bietigheim-Bissingen site are of significance. Almost half of all CO2 emissions are produced by our employees commutinig to their work place and back. To this extent, our site report delivers real data, which makes the climate neutrality achieved, gain even more importance.”

At OLYMP, increased climate protection has been achieved through a wide variety of measures. On the basis of an ecological and sustainable building structure, the site uses a thermal insulation system, an energy concept with waste heat utilisation/heat recovery, an innovative cooling concept (based on the absorber principle) and geothermal energy. The use of energy-efficient storage and conveyor systems makes it possible to produce virtually the entire power requirement of logistics through the use of a block-type thermal power unit (200 kW) and photovoltaics (300 kW) in sunlight. In order to minimise CO2 emissions and other emissions even further, the transportation of products is carried out in a manner which is as environmentally friendly as possible, the site only purchases green energy and invoices are only sent by electronic means. In addition, near-natural habitats for animals and plants are maintained at the company headquarters and additional measures for waste avoidance and waste recycling are taken.“
