BARCELONA HIGHLIGHTS

The Berlin fashion & lifestyle blogger André of TOMmeezJERRY in conversation with OLYMP on the subject of Barcelona

In your opinion, what are the top culture spots that you need to see at least once?

As it happens, I’m not strictly a culture junkie, but what anyone should definitely see is the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. And when you’re out and about in the city, then it’s worth walking to the Arc de Triomf and the Parc de la Ciutadella, which borders on it. What makes Barcelona so special for me are the small, narrow and, above all, tall streets you find between the buildings with the unique architecture. My absolute favourite spot in Barcelona is, without a doubt, the beach promenade and the beach itself.

Which restaurant/café is a must to visit?

If you go in for healthy food (bowls, smoothies) during the day, want to eat the tastiest burger in Barcelona in the evening or fancy drinking a cocktail right on the beach promenade, you can’t go wrong with the Surf House. For me, it’s the most happening spot when it comes to eating in Barcelona. Though remember: in the evening, either be prepared to wait or make a reservation!
If you like to while away the evening in a beach bar – with a view of the Barcelona seafront – you shouldn’t miss visiting the Salt Restaurant & Beach Club right next to the W Barcelona hotel. It is the perfect location to watch the sun go down. In addition, you can have dinner in the restaurant and fish off with a cocktail directly on the beach.

Barcelona is ranked among the fashion hotspots in Europe. Is there a special style of fashion here and, if so, what distinguishes it?

I wouldn’t say now that there is one very special style. With young fashion in particular, rock elements are very conspicuous. Otherwise, a maritime influence is clearly noticeable: shorts, short-sleeve shirts, espadrilles, loafers. This characterises the style in Barcelona.

Your tip for a perfect day here?

I can’t stress it enough. I really liked the Barcelona beach promenade best of all. Right in the city, such a long, clean and fine sandy beach – I haven’t found this anywhere else so far.

What does Barcelona have that no other city in the world has?

Barcelona is, in my view, the perfect combination of modern bustling metropolis and laid-back holiday feeling.
My personal tip: Hire a bike. It lets you travel to all the spots without difficulty and, at the golden hour, to the seafront to watch the sun go down – indescribable! The feeling you’re in California or the South Seas.

How/where do you get your fashion inspiration from?

Currently, I regularly browse Vogue Homme. Vogue always produces street style galleries for the fashion weeks, as in New York, or for Pitti Uomo in Florence. That’s the best source of information for me.

Describe your shirt of the season.

My shirt of the season is undeniably striped. In summer I love shirts with vertical stripes. Preferably, in various colour combinations. A mix of thin and thick stripes also appeals to me. Both as a casual and as a business shirt.
