Climate neutral headquarters

Acting in an exemplary manner for climate protection

For OLYMP, sustainable entrepreneurship also means being a role model in relation to climate protection and keeping the carbon footprint of the company as small as possible. The declared goal of OLYMP is to create climate neutral processes at our own facility. As part of our climate protection strategy at our headquarters in Bietigheim-Bissingen, we take comprehensive measures to save energy and to minimise our greenhouse gas emissions.

We purchase only green electricity. In conjunction with the climate protection experts at ClimatePartner, we compensate the remaining CO2 emissions up to 100 percent, therefore, achieving complete climate neutrality. The basis for this compensation is our Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) for the years 2017 to 2020. In this, we really pushed the boat out and – in contrast to normal practice – we also took into account the commuting practices of our 500+ employees at our Bietigheim-Bissingen facility.

    The OLYMP logistics centre

Innovative – efficient – climate friendly: The OLYMP logistics centre

In 2013, we launched the new OLYMP logistics centre (OLC) in Bietigheim-Bissingen. This shirt warehouse, the largest to combine shuttle and overhead conveyor technology and unique worldwide, is not only distinguished by its high level of functionality and performance, but in particular by its sustainability.

    The special sustainable features are:

    • An economic building structure with thermal insulation
    • A sustainable energy concept based on a block heat and power plant
    • Waste heat utilisation and an innovative cooling concept
    • The use of geothermal energy and a photovoltaic unit
    • The storage of excess heating or cooling in a sprinkler tank
    • The use of highly energy-efficient storage and overhead conveyor systems

With the help of this innovative technology, we manage to generate virtually all the electricity required for our plant. Our ecological concept is rounded off by an extensive green roof, incorporating a stormwater retention feature, as a means of avoiding land consumption and ground sealing.

    Cogeneration plant with power-heat cogeneration

Our block heat and power plant

Thanks to power-heat cogeneration, our gas-powered cogeneration plant generates both thermal and electric energy. Heat that is not used can be temporarily stored in the sprinkler tank. We feed any excess electricity into the public grid. The thermal power output of the OLYMP cogeneration plant is 272 kW, the electric output is 200 kW.

Environmentally friendly solar power for our logistics centre

    Our solar power system

Since our OLYMP logistics centre went into operation in 2013, a photovoltaic unit has been used on the roof. The solar power generated is largely used for our own purposes and any excess power is fed into the public grid. In this way we avoid CO2 emissions from our business while at the same time contributing added value to society.

Geothermal energy: Energy from deep within the earth

    Our geothermal unit

When building the OLYMP logistics centre we decided right from the start to use a sustainable energy concept with waste heat utilisation, heat recovery and heat pumps. The energy from within the earth is made suitable for heating purposes by compacting it to a higher energy level. The heat pump can be used in dual mode for both heating and cooling purposes and is used for transition periods and for times of load spikes. Therefore, the regeneration of the heat reservoir is ensured thanks to the cooling function.
